Join A GTU Class: Faith and Freedom, Global Liberation Theology in a World in Crisis
Description
Explores liberation theology as one of the most influential religious and ethical movements of the modern era. Beginning with the pioneering work of Gustavo Gutiérrez and expanding across traditions to figures such as Mahatma Gandhi, we examine how religious thought becomes a force for social transformation. Students will study feminist, Black, Indigenous, postcolonial, ecological, and economic liberation theologies, analyzing how they confront intertwined systems of injustice. Grounded in lived experience rather than abstract doctrine, these movements reveal theology’s power to inspire ethical action, communal resilience, and new visions of justice for a world facing profound social, political, and ecological crises. Since the late twentieth century, liberation theology has influenced theology, ethics, political thought, postcolonial studies, environmental humanities, and political theology, making it one of the most significant global movements in contemporary religious thought.
