Description
This course will examine the making of Jewish culture from its earliest beginnings in ancient Israel through medieval times. We will focus upon classical Jewish sources as they shed light on the importance of household life and family relations in the making of Jewish culture. Among the themes that we will examine is the primacy of the household as a point of origin for Jewish practice. The broad sweep of this course will allow us to examine the development of Jewish culture over time and to acquire a more nuanced sense of the overall process of cultural production in Judaism.
