Description
Nuclear Justice, Peace, and Sustainability: Theo-Ethical Matters Arising
December 11, 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm
Online Event (Zoom link provided in registration confirmation)
Since its advent in the first half of the 20th century, nuclear technology, in view of its enormous energy yield, potential for mass destruction, and effects with chronopolitan reach, has elicited scholarly and public debates that border on global justice, peace, and sustainability. This forum interrogates the theo-ethical dimensions of the nuclear question, situating it within broader conversation on moral responsibility, ecological integrity, and theological anthropology. The discussion will highlight the interdisciplinary nature of the nuclear dilemma and the critical concerns regarding nuclear non-proliferation and high-level radioactive waste siting. A proposed theo-ethical framework that advances the vision of peace and sustainability grounded in justice will also be presented.
Dr. Oluwatobi Ife-Adediran (Tobi) started his doctoral study at the CTNS in August 2022. Before enrolling in this program, he served as a bivocational minister of the Nigerian Baptist Convention. He also worked as an associate professor and adjunct lecturer of physics in different institutions of higher learning, including the Federal University of Akure, where he earned a PhD in nuclear radiation and health physics. Tobi’s interest in the intersection of theology and science stems not only from his preoccupation in both fields but also from his conviction that sustainable ecological flourishing, human advancement, and existential fulfillment depend largely on the critical dialogue and mutual cooperation between these highly influential disciplines. While he seeks to develop a constructive theology that is relevant for nuclear weapons and waste conventions in his current study, Tobi continues to advance his interests in nuclear peace advocacy, technological ethics, social justice, and radiation protection.
This event is sponsored by the Center for Theology and the Natural Sciences (CTNS) at the Graduate Theological Union.
